Millions of heart patients have reached a point where they can no longer walk to their mailboxes without difficulty. But Dr. Farhan Ali and the cardiology team at Medical City Fort Worth of Fort Worth are giving some heart patients new hope with a procedure approved by the FDA in spring 2015.
The Plaza cardiology team is using the world’s smallest heart pump, the Abiomed Impella® 2.5, to enable some patients to get heart procedures that can greatly improve their quality of life. The device has now received FDA approval for use during high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or stenting procedures (angioplasty and/or placing of a stent in the coronary arteries) performed in certain patients with severe coronary artery disease. This procedure may be a good option for patients who can’t have coronary artery bypass surgery.
